Pune :Hundreds of teachers from Zilla Parishad schools in Pune district on Saturday protested against the government resolutions of February and October regarding teachers’ transfers and seniorgrade pay , respectively .

The protest march, part of the state-wide agitation, was held in the city from ZP office to district collector’s office between 1pm and 4pm.

“We demand that instead of intra-district transfer, only intra-tehsil transfers should be done. Hence, the GR of February 27 needs to be changed. Secondly , the GR on October 23 regarding seniorgrade pay should be cancelled for being unrealistic. We want all online work, which we are made to do, to be stopped with immediate effect. We also want that teachers who joined the work force af ter November 2005 should be eligible for the old pension structure,“ Khanderao Dhobale, secretary, Pune Zilla Parishad School Teachers’ Association, said.

The voices of dissent against the GR about transfers had emerged on social media in the second week of October when teachers were asked to fill up the transfer forms online. “Teachers have committed suicide, some have died of heart attack due to the pressure put by the government them. The website would not open and teachers had to spend two-three days inside cyber cafes just to fill up forms,“ a teacher from Junnar said.

Another teacher said, “If the government doesn’t budge, we will protest in front of the Nagpur Assembly during the winter session. We may even resort to boycotting teaching in schools.“
