The old literary agents’ hypothesis that everyone has a book in them stands proven, for even the dour Dina Nath Batra has one. Several, actually — school textbooks of the sort that are designed to impart moral values but only create adults who look back on their school days with mingled uneasiness and alarm, and are thankful that they survived. Edu Minister writes to over 7,600 meritorious students

MADURAI: The government schools in Thiruvadanai union in Ramanathapuram district have been shut down this academic year for lack of students. RTE admissions up 50% this year

CHENNAI: The number of RTE admissions in Tamil Nadu has gone up from 49,864 in 2013-14 to 74,127 this year, announced school education minister K C Veeramani in the current Assembly session. This is nearly a 50% jump over the last year. Read the rest of this entry »

Token gestures: 22 schools but no new college

NEW DELHI: The education sector has got 14.8% of the total outlay but the only new element in the list of projects mentioned in the budget is the setting up of 22 new schools. While Delhi is sorely in need of new schools, 22 will not meet the requirement for complying with the Right to Education Act by a long shot. Admissions under RTE dip further in division

KOLHAPUR: The Kolhapur divisional board of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has received 709 applications for photocopies of answer sheets and 428 for verification of marks in the SSC (secondary school certificate) results this year. KV teachers to ‘adopt’ worries of parents

ALLAHABAD: The Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) would now adopt the academic worries of students whose mother or father is posted outside the city. Primary teachers oppose education rules

BHUBANESWAR: Primary teachers of the state on Wednesday opposed the recently-announced elementary education rules 2014, saying that the new rule will affect career prospects of about 75% teachers.
